Not Ready? We’ll Get You There

The academy and the job training won’t be easy, but they are designed to provide you with the tools to thrive as a corrections officer for Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center. Our team isn’t looking to “weed out” substandard recruits. We are looking to find potential and help it evolve into something better: a well-trained, prepared, and competent corrections officer.
What You Need
Hiring and Training

While we do have minimum requirements, what we’re really looking for is good people who care passionately about their communities. Like any employment opportunity, we need our staff to be able to complete their assigned tasks and duties. That’s why we require the following minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 18 years old by the start of the academy
  • U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible to work in the U.S.
  • A valid driver’s license.
Beyond these straightforward prerequisites, we only ask that you work hard, remain honest, and keep an open mind. If this sounds like you, sign up with us and we’ll figure out how to help you succeed.
Are You Ready?

Qualified candidates are individuals who meet our core values and can dedicate themselves to the safety of our community, the inmates in our custody, and our fellow correctional officers. We require all of our team members to perform their duties with integrity, honor, respect, compassion, and courage. This is not your everyday desk job, and successful candidates must be able to think on their feet, react quickly to rapidly evolving situations, and always keep an eye on the broader goals of transparency, integrity, and safety.

The Academy

Right now, you’re standing at the starting line of the most important race of your life. It won’t be a sprint, it will be a marathon, but once you’ve made it, you can be assured that you’ll be proud of your career choice and all the work it took to get you there. Your future depends on the next step you take and in what direction you take it.
